Most of us don’t need to learn more about communication; we need to be reminded of the things that work, and then go do them.
“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.” - Arthur Conan Doyle
Obvious but overlooked:
People will look at your eyes to determine where your attention is.
Someone’s perception of you is their reality of you — even if their perception is factually “wrong.”
What’s obvious to you isn’t usually obvious to others. State the obvious.
Repetition breeds retention. If it matters, say it again.
Concise doesn’t mean short. It means there’s no fluff.
People want answers before explanations.
Effective communication often feels uncomfortable. Most people aren’t effective communicators because they’re not willing to be uncomfortable.
Choosing to listen to someone doesn’t mean you agree with them.
The more you say, the more you have to explain. Start with less.
If you memorize your message, you’ll be too focused on remembering what to say to connect with who you’re saying it to.
