This is so good. What would be better to do with my hands than steepling them. It feels nice to have one hand position that I can return to if I start feeling awkward and don’t know what to do with the hands.

You have a few options here: The one I tend to teach is to let your arms rest down by your sides when you're not actively gesturing, and as soon as you're ready to gesture, you pick them up and gesture. This will feel awkward for you, but it won't look awkward. You can also let your hands gently rest together in front of your core without "placing" them together. Or, I've seen in more casual settings, hands resting on hips. Here are two videos I recommend you watch and notice hand/arm placement when not actively gesturing:
